The innovative design of the new STEAM & Success Academies building aims to accommodate the expansion of two forward-thinking educational programs within Kentucky's second-largest school district, while fostering community engagement through shared spaces. Drawing inspiration from the vibrant murals, wall prints, and student artwork of the previous facilities, our goal was to seamlessly integrate these elements into the new environment.
In collaboration with the programs, I developed a series of lesson plans to directly involve students in the process of environmental branding. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, we adapted by transitioning to virtual sessions, leveraging technology to maintain engagement and facilitate creative expression. Through ongoing dialogue with students, we explored their values, aspirations, and visions for leaving a lasting impact on their school.
Guided by the students' input, we conceptualized graphics that reflect themes of exploration, ambition, and the interconnectedness of STEAM disciplines. From vast ocean vistas to celestial landscapes, these visuals symbolize the journey of learning and the significance of embracing curiosity. Students actively contributed their own graphic ideas, which were incorporated into the final designs.
Following the completion of our collaborative learning series, I translated the students' concepts and sketches into a series of five oversized graphics. These include an entry graphic embodying the essence of the STEAM brand, two graphics overlooking the multipurpose space, a two-story graphic connecting the floors, and a hallway graphic within the SUCCESS Academy wing. Through this process, students not only left their mark on the physical environment but also gained valuable insights into the creative process and the power of collective imagination.
